There is nothing quite like the simplicity of a black line on a white surface. One of my favorite methods of creating an image is with two values—black and white.Over the years I have done a great deal of black and white work not all of whichI still have copies of. Much of it was "trash for cash" in the bad old days of the studio. But what I have kept and have a copy of is what I consider to be the good stuff.

Jump down to the good stuff.

I did not start out with the computer in the world of illustration and commercial art. I have seen a huge change in how art is now created having started with Illustrator 88 (the first version of Illustrator) and Photoshop I. The tools today have become very sophisticated and complete. Here are some old and newer illustrations all created within the digital realm.

One of the best free drawing programs out there for the iPad is Ideas by Adobe. Simple, simple, simple. One kind of brush, millions of colors, layers if you want to buy them, transparency, and send as a PDF or save to your images space. If you love to draw this is the one. And best of all it is free.

These are just a few samples of what is possible with the program. I sure you will do better.

While in Greece in the spring of 2009 on a Principica College Abroad program I had the opportunity to draw and paint every day. Here is a partial portfolio of the color work from those days. Painting in Greece and Turkey was like no other experience I have had before. The colors were more vivid, my brush took on a life of its own and I really did not want to stop at the end of each day. Painting on location is the best.
It is approaching six years since I took the Fall 2005 Principia Art Abroad to Montana and parts of the west. But in looking through my sketchbook the memories, the smells, the feeling, the atmosphere of each of the places we spent time at are as real today as the day I experienced them the first time. That is the power of art and drawing. You soak up a bit of the place and it becomes part of you.

About Me
It all started with an Illustrator's Annual sitting on a library shelf. Flipping through the work I realized for the first time what I wanted in my life. Grad school followed and quickly a job in the commercial art world of Detroit. Cars and more cars. Ten years of this was enough. Off to teaching. Fifteen years of teaching and freelancing has brought me to this point in my career. I love to solve problems. I love the creative process. I am comfortable with all types of mediums with sports photography a passion. Living in the mid—specifically in southern Illinois—where it is hot and muggy in the summer—perfect weather for cycling.
